Attitudes around generational gaps at work: development and validation of a scale
Actitudes en torno a las brechas generacionales en el trabajo: desarrollo y validación de una escala
Main Article Content
The purpose of this study was to establish the psychometric properties of a scale to measure attitudes. This scale was developed and validated in the framework of this research to work with generational gaps, and it was administered to a sample of 200 Puerto Rican employees in the health area. The sample had an equal distribution by gender (50%), the average age was
42 years (with a standard deviation of 13.74) and 57% of the sample were nurses. Initially, a total of 37 items were developed, of which 16 were left after passing a content validity by expert judges. The score of this "Content Validity Index" (C.V.I.) was .99, which indicates that the scale does have content validity. A pilot study (n = 40) was carried out to evaluate the instructions of the scale, the wording of the items and the operationalization of the scale. A discrimination analysis was also performed with (the "item-total correlation"), leaving 10 items. Lastly, construct validity was carried out (using the principal components technique, with varimax rotation), finally leaving two factors in the scale. The obtained Cronback Alpha reliability was .83. The results indicate that the scale has content and construct validity, and that it is reliable, all these properties make it a valid and reliable tool to measure generational attitudes at work. It is recommend to do more studies with the scale and other validity studies.
