Abstract

The practice of mindfulness, especially the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, has demonstrated multiple benefits on the mental health of the general population. However, there is little research that has been carried out in the Latin American context. Given this condition, the present research was designed with the objective of evaluating the effects of the MBSR Mindfulness program on stress, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation and psychological well-being in Mexican university students. To achieve this purpose, a total of 132 participants were randomized to three groups (the In-Person Program (PP) group, the In-Person Program plus Activities at Home (PP + AC) group or the Control group). Each of them answered four psychometric instruments in a pretest/post-test design. The results showed that, when comparing the two versions of the same mindfulness program and the control group, the participants who received the in-person sessions and also carried out the activities at home reported a greater decrease in their levels of stress, anxiety, depression and maladaptive strategies, as well as an increase in the use of their adaptive strategies, their level of mindfulness and their psychological well-being. In conclusion, it was identified that students assigned to the In-Person Program plus Home Activities group were able to better contain the impact of risk factors and also increased the use of emotion regulation strategies achieving a significant increase in their psychological well-being.
