Abstract

The complexity of intimate partner violence (IPV) requires research into the characteristics of the batterers. This research explores the interrelationships among displaced aggression (DA) and other constructs of interest in men who were in prison for an IPV offense. Specifically, the objective of this study is to identify latent profiles based on DA and compare them with anger rumination (AR), social desirability (SD), adult attachment (AA), and cognitive emotional regulation (CER). A total of 196 offenders (M = 41.2 years, SD = 11.2) participated while serving sentences in Spain. As a result, and according to the scores obtained in the Displaced Aggression Questionnaire (DA-High, DA-Medium, and DA-Low), three profiles of abusers have been identified. These profiles are consistent with the scores obtained on the Anger Rumination Scale. In turn, the DA-High and DA-Medium groups scored higher than the DA-Low group on the AA dimensions of low Self-esteem and Resentment/possessiveness, and on the CER strategy of Blaming others. In contrast, the DA-Low group scored higher on SD and on the expression of AA feelings than the other two groups. Finally, the DA-High and DA-Medium groups were very similar in AR, SD, AA, and CER. It is concluded that SD can influence the self-evaluation of DA and that certain variables (Catastrophizing, Blaming others, Low self-esteem, Resentment/possessiveness, and Emotional self-sufficiency) are relevant in DA. Addressing AA and CER may be very useful in interventions with men who engage in IPV.
