Main Article Content
The objective of the review was to present the core components of the cognitive model and cognitive therapy for substance abuse disorders. An analysis of Beck’s model and his cognitive therapy was carried out, which isa treatment based on the identification of cognitive distortions, automatic thoughts, addictive and permissive intermediate beliefs, and compensatory behaviors derived from cognitionand craving,. This was followed by the introduction of the core elements to carry out an adecquate assessment of the cases of addictive dissorders, the cognitive case formulation and the planning of the cognitive therapy. An overview of the available
empirical evidence is also put forward, evidence which supports the treatment called CBT as one of the most recommended, especially in interventions that imply the intake of pharmaceutical drugs such as Naltrexone. Finally, some recent techniques are addressed, which are based on meditation and cognitive modification, along with others that prove to be effective.
