Efectos de las Intervenciones de Estimulación Cognitiva a través de la Tecnología en Adultos Mayores: Una Revisión Sistemática

Abstract

Elder Adults (EA) face high risk of developing neurocognitive pathologies with negative impact in their quality of life. In these neuro-pathologies the application of non-pharmacological treatments is recommended at early stages. Cognitive stimulation interventions have demonstrated efficacy to slow down cognitive impairment and to stabilize a functional state, mostly by virtue of cognitive plasticity. A Systematic literature review has taken place to comprehend the effects of Cognitive Stimulation Interventions (CSI) through technology for older adults with and without Cognitive Impairment (CI). Advanced research in PubMed, EBSCO and APA Psycnet, resulted in the recovery of 13 articles. The exclusion criteria admitted specifically CSI intended for EA with and without CI, developed through technology, and solely from the last decade both in Spanish and English. The results have shown significant improvements short and long-term in the fields of global cognition, memory, processing speed, attention, language and quality of life. In conclusion, it is evident that CSI is successful to slow down cognitive impairment and to improve cognitive functions both in healthy EA as in EA with CI. Nevertheless, the study presents its limitations such as exclusive selection of articles just in Spanish or English and privation of investigation articles reporting about CSI in EA with CI.
