Self-disclosure: Measurement in the Mexican couple
Auto-divulgación: Medición en la pareja mexicana
Main Article Content
Self-disclosure is a vital form of interpersonal communication, is used to reveal personal information to others. Particularly in the romantic context, this variable becomes more important because it represents the vehicle through which one goes deepening in the knowledge of the other, until the establishment of important levels of intimacy. The study of self-disclosure was booming decades ago, being able to be defined, distinguished from other constructs and partially evaluated. Given the above, the purpose of this research was to operationalize it in the context of the couple in Mexico City. For this purpose, a non-probabilistic sample of 994 participants with minimum studies of high school and who had a partner at the time of application of the measure was used. The results indicate that a valid and reliable measure culturally sensitive to Mexican couples, containing the elements proposed by (Altman, 1973) in their Theory of Social Penetration, was composed of 12 factors that refer to 10 basic conversation themes during couple interaction (beliefs and future plans, sexual life, dislikes, disappointments and failures, desires and achievements, experiences outside the relationship, relationship, non-self-disclosure,
preferences and opinions on various topics ) and two factors that are forms of direct nonverbal and verbal affectionate communication (affectionate treatment and the use of "we").
