Early Maladaptive Schemas and their Incidence in Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review
Esquemas Maladaptativos Tempranos y su Incidencia en los Trastornos de la Conducta Alimentaria: Una Revisión Sistemática
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Eating Disorders (EDs) have a multi-etiological origin and recent research has shown a growing interest in evaluating the role of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in the onset and maintenance of this type of pathology, however, there is little empirical analytic research that clarifies this relationship. The present systematic review examines the current state of knowledge on the incidence of early schemas in the clinical and non-clinical population.
Method: Systematic literature review in the following databases: Scopus, PubMed and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection.
Results: Fourteen studies were identified for inclusion. Shame/defectiveness, emotional deprivation, social isolation, emotional inhibition and perfectionism schemas were found to be more prevalent in the clinical population with an ED compared to the normal population.
Conclusion: The schematic domains of disconnection and rejection and over surveillance and inhibition may become predictors for the development and maintenance of an eating disorder. It is important that future research continues to clarify the causal relationship that might exist between STMS and ED because of the implications for clinical conceptualization and intervention.
