Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between structural characteristics and social support in personal networks of women affected by domestic violence. We evaluated a sample of 19 women through the implementation of the Arizona Social Support Interview Schedule assessing the emotional, informative and tangible support types regarding the quantitative aspects of networks (size, composition, structure). Data were analyzed with Student’s t and Pearson correlation coefficients. Small formed networks were identified primarily by family and close friends, with frequent interactions, but little evidence of social support. Most sources of support were obtained from close friends. It can be concluded that battered women have small networks that offer low levels of support compared to the expected support by participants.
